01Say Them Today

"I'm proud of you." We think it. We watch someone we love do something hard — hold it together, try again, show up — and we feel it move through us. Then the moment passes and we never said a word. Four syllables that land differently than any compliment about the result.

"I was wrong." Not "I'm sorry if you were upset." Not the apology that buries a small defence somewhere in the middle. Just the plain admission, offered cleanly. It costs something real and that's precisely why it matters.

"I've been thinking about you." Not in response to a crisis — just out of the blue, mid-Tuesday, because you genuinely were. There's a person in your life right now who would go quiet and warm at that sentence landing in their inbox. We withhold it because it feels too soft, too much. It isn't.

"That was really hard for me." Said without blame, without buildup. Sometimes the most useful thing we can do in a relationship — with a partner, a friend, a sister — is simply name the thing honestly rather than hoping they'll intuit it. Vulnerability said plainly is not weakness; it's an opening.

"That was really hard for me." Said without blame, without buildup.

"Thank you for being you." Not for what someone did. Not for the favour or the lift or the listening ear, though those matter too. For who they are. The specific, particular, irreplaceable fact of them. It's the rarest of the five, and possibly the one that stays longest.

None of these require a grand occasion. They just require a moment, and the decision to use it.
